VISTA - Museum Educator

The overall goals for the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center are to improve the quality of education, to improve Center accessibility for all populations, and to increase the capacity of the Interpretive Center to present relevant information to students and the public. Heart Mountain Interpretive Center represents 14,000+ Japanese Americans unjustly incarcerated in WY during WWII. As the only internment camp museum run by a private foundation comprised largely of former incarcerees and their decedents, The Center is “forward facing,” where lessons from the past can be employed in shaping a better future. HMIC educates visitors on the historical perspectives of the disenfranchised and marginalized with the goal of building empathy and creating profound change. HMIC aims to decrease barriers to education and increase accessibility to the Center, especially for low-income populations. The VISTA Museum Educator position will build HMIC’s capacity to accomplish these goals and to improve museum physical and financial accessibility for groups unable to access this educational resource by: developing new virtual programming that will be available to anyone; planning and fundraising for building modifications to the museum and existing outdoor ruin sites; creating lesson plans that meet the needs of various age groups; and implementing programs to offset transportation and admission costs. Finally the VISTA will incorporate these changes as well as other recommendations into a site-wide interpretive plan that will continue to guide museum practices and programming long after the VISTA exits service. Ultimately the combination of these strategies will help combat poverty in Park County by decreasing barriers to a valuable educational resource from which locals and visitors alike can learn from the past, and motivating students to pursue opportunities that internment camp residents did not have.
