*Goodwill* – Next Charter School – Derry, NH

The Granite State Education Corps places AmeriCorps members with schools and nonprofits to support youth (grades 4-12) that have been impacted by adverse child experiences and/or the foster care system. Members will take a strengths-based approach, implementing Social Emotional Learning (SEL) practices, mentoring youth, provide individualized support, and goal setting to increase resilience, develop human capital, and ultimately increase self-sufficiency of the youth. The mission of Next Charter School is to meet the needs of students not fully served within a traditional high school educational program and to employ a system of instructional and assessment practices that values competency, inquiry, flexibility, and the social nature of learning so that all students will graduate and initiate post-secondary learning options. Next is a state-authorized, public high school of choice that maintains a strong partnership with the local K-8 school district. Next began serving students in 2013 with the aim to attract students who are disenfranchised, disconnected, and/or disengaged. The percentages of special education students and students identified for free/reduced lunch—based on poverty scales—are significantly higher in our population than traditional public schools in the local area. Our mission attempts to provide students with a personalized and individualized learning environment. To that end, Next operates under the following precept: “One size does not fit all.”

Member Duties : Members will implement the SEL mentoring program, an intervention for academically disengaged students. In addition, AmeriCorps members will leverage volunteers to engage in mentoring, service-learning, academic support, parent engagement, and enrichment interventions. The primary role of a member is to work directly with students. Everyone at Next helps to define, shape, and guide the organization. As a result, members participate in staff meetings, exhibitions (public displays of student work), morning and closing meetings, special education meetings, field experiences, team challenges, and public outreach. Depending on knowledge, skill, and interest, members can operate as a co-teacher, 1:1 academic coach, club facilitator, or advisor. All members operate a mentoring program to support student achievement and run small group executive functioning support classes. Lastly, members attend monthly student-parent meetings to support students’ growth and report on their progress.
