Old Brooklyn CDC Farmers Market Development VISTA

Old Brooklyn CDC is rooted in geography and resident-driven goals. At the forefront of the national community health movement for CDCs, we have strengthened OBCDC’s track record in programming, data collection and evaluation – pushing the envelope for community organizations seeking to improve health. By addressing social determinants of health (including access to fresh foods, healthy housing and economic stability), we are better able to serve the residents and businesses of Old Brooklyn. Our greatest strength is also our constant challenge: remaining rooted in and acting in concert with residents. OBCDC is committed to prioritizing resident voice; as a result, we must seek to ensure representation from the entire community, not just a vocal few. OBCDC initiated a resident committee to help guide our work in Old Brooklyn. One of the most influential interventions that this committee gave rise to was the local Old Brooklyn Farmers Market. Not only have we been able to bring fresh, local produce each week to an area designated by the county as a food desert, but we also use the event as an effective tool for community engagement. OBCDC would like to enhance our capacity to create and maintain a vibrant farmers market where we encourage healthy habits and opportunities for residents to lead a healthier life. The 2019 and 2020 Farmers Market was a great success with more than 2,100 attendees in 2019 and 3,000+ in 2020. The changes implemented these past 2 years have solidified our commitment to the Old Brooklyn community to provide fresh, healthy foods to our residents.
