Texas Family Literacy AmeriCorps 2019-2020

1 in 5 adults in Texas can’t read or write well enough to fill out a job application. And less than 5% of these adults have access to educational services to meet their needs. Become part of the Texas Family Literacy AmeriCorps team – learn, develop and contribute by helping people in need to build essential literacy skills. Located in Austin and Houston, we offer a range of education-focused national service opportunities that are making a growing difference helping to address peoples' literacy needs across our region. For members interested in serving and teaching adults they will be able to teach/tutor in English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE) (basic reading and writing), and GED and workforce literacy (skills to get and keep a job). For individuals interested in serving with children and families, members deliver family literacy programs for parents and children (under 5) and also provide early childhood literacy for children (ages 2-5). All programs are based on research-validated curriculum and are operated with/through our network of 40+ community-based nonprofit partners. Members are matched with local nonprofits to: 1. Teach classes or tutor adults in English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education, or GED classes. 2. Provide Workforce Literacy for adults seeking to improve their employment and careers. 3. Provide early childhood interventions for low-income families. 4. Coach parenting program (called PALS) to promote emotional, cognitive, and language development. Members also participate in team meetings, professional development, community service, and team building activities. Members receive a range of training, tools, an education award and great industry connections as well as practical experience. Members also gain important work skills and opportunities for leadership. Service is a great way into local non-profit networks as well as an achievable path to real experience and skills to build a career.
