Nutrition Education Specialist – Hunger Relief
 
 
 
Catholic Charities, Diocese of Nashville provides comprehensive services that address basic needs while also helping clients build and travel their personal path out of poverty and trauma. Weaving trauma-informed practices throughout our staff and programming, Catholic Charities’ services include basic needs assistance, counseling, homelessness prevention, refugee and immigration services, trauma groups, adoptions, and workforce development. This position will work with our Hunger Relief department in Nashville, TN. Hunger Relief aims to ensure that nobody goes hungry in the areas we serve. The programs within Hunger Relief include Loaves and Fishes, a feeding program operating out of the Parish Center of Holy Name Catholic Church, where Catholic Charities enlists volunteers to help serve hot meals for breakfast and lunch to our guests; additionally, we serve a hot lunch at St. Stephen’s Catholic Community once a week. Working closely with Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee, Catholic Charities also provides Supplemental Food Boxes to our low-income Seniors two days a week. Catholic Charities at C. E. McGruder offers more than 20+ programs that help North Nashvillians improve the quality of their lives including: • Job training • Housing security • Hunger relief • Family and Adult program • Children and Youth Programs • Starting a Business Our Nutrition Education Specialist will use the Healthy for Life curriculum of the American Heart Association. As schedules permit, additional groups that could benefit from the work of the Nutrition Education Specialist include our refugee elders and youth groups, our SNAP recipients, and other clients in our varied programs.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps member will use the American Heart Association’s Healthy for Life education program designed to change behaviors regarding food and nutrition. The AmeriCorps member will demonstrate cooking techniques and prepare delicious and healthy food with the help of volunteers, enabling clients to acquire new skills to prepare more nutritious meals. The AmeriCorps member will provide culturally relevant healthy recipes to clients, increase their level of comfort with healthy foods, and educate clients on budgeting and shopping for healthy foods. The AmeriCorps member will conduct assessments, use evaluations to strengthen services, document clients' participation and understanding of topics, and prepare reports for funders as needed. They will interact with guests, create recipes, and conduct various program needs. Members may also assist with volunteer recruitment and management as needed for the nutrition education program’s needs.
