PROGRAM: The fulltime & part-time members of the VT Youth Development Corps AmeriCorps State Program (VYDC) implement diverse youth initiatives, fostering positive development & building resilience to help youth avoid opioid misuse & other unhealthy behaviors, transcend the effects of COVID-19, and the gain academic, social, & job skills needed to thrive. Website: VermontYouthAmeriCorps.org SITE: Located in the basement of Montpelier City Hall, the Basement Teen Center (BTC) is a drop-in space for youth ages 12 to 18, providing a much-needed safe space for positive activities and socializing during afterschool and summer hours. The BTC offers healthy snacks and meals along with classes and programs to help teens build the developmental assets & resilience necessary to make healthy choices. BTC classes cover subjects such as health education, healthy relationships, and substance misuse prevention. We also encourage and support teens to design and run their own programs on topics such as art, photography, cooking, and programming & coding. For our VYDC-Basement Teen Center AmeriCorps Member, we’re looking for a creative, self-motivated, and caring adult who can develop unique programing, foster creativity, and offer support & guidance to teens in whatever area they need. The member also provides information, embodies empathy, and serves as a positive role model for all youth. COVID-19: As youth in our community recover from the short- and long-term impacts of COVID-19 (a sense of isolation, disconnection, increased anxiety, and loss of levity), the member’s service provides another empathetic adult to engage with youth and give them the additional space, respect, time and support they need to thrive. The breadth of programming that the member develops addresses the increased isolation, and anxiety, as well as the lack of access to learning opportunities created by the pandemic. Member Duties : The VYDC- Basement Teen Center AmeriCorps Member develops & implements unique activities to foster positive youth development & build resilience: (1) creates curricula & implements programs (civic discussions, physical activities, substance misuse prevention, & healthy lifestyles); (2) recruits & manages volunteers; (3) facilitates opportunities for youth to connect with peers; (4) inspires youth to discover their passions (arts, music, poetry, STEM, etc.); (5) participates in all aspects of the BTC; and (6) engages in public relations & outreach, seeks non-federal in-kind & grant resources, and enhances systems to capture evidence of success. Minimum Age: 18. Transportation: access to reliable private transportation, valid license, & clean driving record; monthly travel to AmeriCorps training in central VT. Preferred certifications & skills: CPR, First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, Leave No Trace, & group facilitation. Send resume, cover letter, & contact info for 2 references.
