Code In the Schools- Middle School Pilot
 
 
 
Code in the Schools (CITS) is a Baltimore City non-profit that is committed to expanding access to quality computer science (CS) education programs to ensure that all Baltimore residents are prepared to be active members of the 21st century economy. We achieve this through fun and innovative in-school, after-school, and summer programming for predominantly under-resourced youth youth age 4-21, as well as professional development for educators throughout the region. In the last year, we served over 3,000 students are and set to serve hundreds more as we continue to grow. The VISTA assigned will help maintaining and executing programs at after-school and summer sites. This includes but is not limited to: student recruitment and retention; updating existing model to support participating 8th graders’ transition to continued study of CS in high school and assist in program evaluation and report writing. Member Duties : The primary goal of this VISTA project is to maintain the Middle School Prodigy Program and summer bridge program, CodeScholar. Youth who participate in these programs learn computer science concepts. To accomplish this, the VISTA will: Help establish and coordinate the program at new partner sites Devise effective recruitment and retention strategies, focusing their efforts on recruiting students with a high interest in computing and technology. Update existing model to support 8th grade students’ transition to continued study of CS in high school Participate in program evaluation and implementation of improvement strategies Liaise between Code in the Schools staff and partner sites General project and program coordination activities Information about partner sites The VISTA will be working with schools that serve traditionally underrepresented populations in CS, particularly low-income, African-American students.
