LKC: KidSight Outreach Specialist VISTA

Vision problems in children aged 6-months to 6-years-old often go unnoticed, especially in families that lack access to basic healthcare. Without treatment, vision problems can undermine a child’s ability to read, which is a critical skill in educational success. KidSight provides free vision screenings and helps parents get their children treatment before it’s too late to avoid the permanent vision loss that can result from some eye conditions. KidSight is a sub-site of the Literacy KC VISTA Program. The Literacy KC VISTA Program seeks to address illiteracy through a concentration on traditional literacy as well as health literacy, financial literacy, and digital literacy. The VISTA members and organizations that participate in the Literacy KC VISTA Program take a holistic, collaborative approach to literacy, building the organizations’ capacity to serve their clients, and addressing poverty in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
