SerVermont - Feeding Chittenden

Founded in 1974, Feeding Chittenden was launched as the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf to fight hunger and food insecurity faced by households throughout Chittenden County. In 2019 we changed our name to Feeding Chittenden to better communicate our overall mission and dynamic programming that we operate as the largest direct service hunger relief organization in the state. Our mission is to provide food, community, and opportunity through our diverse programming. In addition to our Food Shelf, which provides a week’s supply of groceries, prepared meals, and fresh bread and produce to over 10,000 individuals experiencing food insecurity annually, we operate 5 other programs designed to help low income Vermonters meet their basic needs. We run the Hot Meals Program, which provides a hot breakfast, 6 days a week to any community member in need. More than 60,000 meals are served in our cafeteria each year. The kitchen hosts our Community Kitchen Academy, a culinary job training program operated in partnership between Feeding Chittenden and the Vermont Foodbank. Students gain the professional and interpersonal skills they need to find and retain employment in the hospitality industry. Meals prepared in the program are distributed in our food shelf and used to fight hunger in the community. The Good Food Truck serves meals in low-income neighborhoods from a mobile food truck – mobilizing our hunger relief efforts and creating access to healthy, balanced meals to families and children. The Homebound Delivery Program delivers a week’s supply of groceries to homebound clients and serves over 150 households a month, providing specialized care, much needed food, and a welcome visit. The Food Rescue program fights food waste and local hunger by partnering with community businesses to rescue over 1 million pounds of food each year. Edible, nutritious food from farms, restaurants, and grocery stores is saved from the landfill and used to feed over 12,000 individuals a year.
