SerVermont - Willing Hands

Willing Hands’ mission is to recover perishable food in order to reduce waste, improve health, and provide reliable access to nutritious food for our neighbors in need. From our founding in 2004, Willing Hands has focused on addressing hunger and healthy eating for those facing poverty and food insecurity by delivering perishable, healthy food, mostly fresh fruits and vegetables, throughout the Upper Valley region of Vermont and New Hampshire. Over our 17-year history, our organization has grown considerably. We recover fresh food from grocers and produce wholesalers, volunteers help us glean produce directly from local farms and orchards, and grow additional vegetables in volunteer-powered gardens. In 2020, Willing Hands recovered and distributed over 950,000 pounds of healthy, free food to our 80 recipient organizations which include food shelves, low-income housing facilities, senior centers, and other non-profits who share our mission. Ninety percent of these organizations do not have another source of fresh, perishable food. We are growing our impact and serving more of our community by increasing the amount of food we deliver and the number of people we serve. Nearly a quarter of our food recipients are children, and another quarter are seniors. We serve organizations that work directly with populations struggling with poverty, and through feedback on our programs we understand that our food deliveries help nearly all recipients maintain a healthier diet and/or save money for other basic needs. Because of the pandemic, food insecurity has risen dramatically, and families with children have been impacted at higher rates. Willing Hands VISTA members have researched existing programs, and conducted a pilot project of our own all with the goal of developing a process for targeting specific fresh food resources to families in need, and will expand this program in the coming year to get more healthy food to children in our region.

Member Duties : The VISTA’s service will build partnerships among Willing Hands and up to six local schools or community organizations and six food shelves serving them, to get consistent supplies of fresh produce to families in need. Objectives of this program include strengthening the support system of existing food resources to families with children, increasing their access to fresh nutritious food, and reducing barriers to healthy eating. Furthering Willing Hands’ mission of reducing hunger and promoting healthy eating for those struggling with poverty, the VISTA will continue to expand our 2020-21 pilot project to expand and refine our Healthy Fresh Food Boxes program. The 2021-22 VISTA will enhance our organizational capacity to better serve children and families in need through their local food shelves and will have opportunities to develop fundraising and communication skills in an active nonprofit setting to make a meaningful difference for the most food insecure in our community.
