Salish Kootenai College aspires to be the pre-eminent educational center of excellence for American Indian Students, grounded in the cultures of the Séliš, Ksanka and QÍispé people of the Flathead Nation. The college will empower students to improve the lives of their families and communities through research, leadership and service. Upward Bound is a federally funded program designed to provide low-income, First-generation high school students with the skills and motivation necessary for success in postsecondary education. The program serves students on the Flathead Indian Reservation. Services include tutoring, mentoring, college entrance preparation, enrichment activities, and college visitations. A six-week residential summer component on campus offers students high school credit, college credit, and work-study experiences. According to the U.S. Census Bureau 2009-2013 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates, only 15% of adults on the Flathead Indian Reservation, ages 25 and older, have attained a baccalaureate degree. The national rate for college completions 60%. For Native students the rates drop lower with 43% graduating from MSU, 31% from UM, and 40% graduating across the nation. National Source: (Graduation Rates for Selected Cohorts, 2006-11; Student Financial Aid, Academic Year 2013-14; and Admissions in Postsecondary Institutions, Fall 2014 First Look (Provisional Data), December, 2015) To increase high school graduation rates, and college going rates, the program strives for 60% of participants to have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better on a four-point scale at the end of each school year.
