Rural Action 2021 Summer Associate

Rural Action is a membership based development organization that promotes social, economic, and environmental justice. We’ve worked in Appalachian Ohio since 1991 building model sustainable development projects in sectors built from the region’s assets. These are sustainable agriculture, sustainable forestry, waste recycling, watershed restoration, environmental education, and an AmeriCorps program. We have 1,000 members throughout Appalachian Ohio and our passion is helping communities pursue economic transition out of poverty and away from extractive industries. With high endemic poverty rates, these efforts are even more important, especially as they pertain to land-based opportunities like local food and agriculture. The Sustainable Agriculture Program works to build and strengthen local food systems by supporting agriculture that is good for the economy, the environment, and the community. We offer a wide range of farmer to consumer programming to increase local food production and consumption, providing tool kits that increase profitability for farmers, and increase demand by consumers.

Member Duties : Summer Associates will increase the capacity of low-income people to improve their conditions through the support of local food production and healthy food access in Appalachian Ohio. This will be achieved by supporting food hubs, creating and distributing marketing tools for producers, and supporting aggregation and distribution. The Summer Associate will do this with a coordinated team within Rural Action, focusing on developing a local food economy in Appalachian Ohio. The Summer Associates will work with community volunteers and partners. Work includes maintaining and supporting the growth of the Chesterhill Produce Auction - a local food hub located in rural Morgan County, supporting educational opportunities for a diverse group of regional farmers, and increasing the distribution of fresh local foods into targeted areas with vulnerable populations – food deserts, rural school districts, and hospitals.
