CCNYPA Northampton Community College VISTA

In Portland, Bangor and East Bangor boroughs, three of the seven communities in BASD, poverty rates are 21%, 14.1%, and 10.6%, respectively. While the high school completion rate in BASD is high (91.9%), college attendance lags behind. Only 67% of all graduates went on to pursue a college education, with 24% enrolling in 2-year programs and 43% enrolling in 4-year programs. Future earning potential may be limited for the roughly 25% of BASD graduates who did not pursue post-secondary education after high school. Wage data from the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that education beyond high school is a key to higher salaries. People with some college or an Associate degree earn $904/week on average, but the median weekly income in the Bangor area is $821. Improving college access and success will provide Bangor area residents with greater earning potential and reduce poverty.
