CCNYPA Juniata College's Health Literacy VISTA

The VISTA will work to build the capacity of a population health partnership between Juniata College and community health organizations with a specific focus on the ACHIEVE(Advancing Community Health Innovation through Education, Vision, and Empowerment) health literacy program. The ACHIEVE curriculum, which has two phases, will initially be launched in county schools. Through health literacy modules the program will educate youth about how to proactively identify health needs, access resources in the community, and address social determinants of health through community health innovation projects using the HPAC IDEAS (Identify, Design, Engage, Assess, Share) model. The projects may be small or large in scale, but are all hyperlocal in terms of the problems being addressed and outcomes assessed, with the ultimate goal of increasing health literacy on the individual and community levels. Improving health literacy helps to alleviate poverty, as those who lack knowledge in this area, disproportionately those living in poverty, often lack knowledge that prevents them from understanding how to address lifestyle factors that lead to poor health. Work of the VISTA will include implementation and evaluation of the program, maintaining partnerships with county school districts, overseeing ACHIEVE mentors and projects, issue and resource mapping, as well as looking for opportunities to support the sustainable development and efforts of the ACHIEVE program . Previous studies have shown that health education leads to decreased obesity rates, increased health-promoting behaviors, and lower rates of substance use and violence
