ShareCorps- Oberlin Community Services- Garden Associate

Oberlin Community Services (OCS) is a dynamic, responsive community organization providing direct assistance, referrals, educational support and outreach services to income-eligible Lorain County residents who struggle to meet basic needs. Founded in 1955, OCS is one of the largest social safety net agencies in our area. OCS’s vision is to work toward greater social justice; to build resiliency, community and sustainability in Lorain County by providing emergency services like casework and food; and by offering educational programming and resources. Our food programs include a weekly choice food pantry, holiday distributions, Meals on Wheels, a community garden, free produce distributions, a large monthly food distribution, and targeted services for youth and seniors in the form of an after-school snack program, a summer lunch program and deliveries of supplemental food boxes for local seniors. Through the daily choice food pantry, OCS provides individualized hunger support by meeting varied dietary needs, by offering a wealth of fresh fruits and vegetables, by providing four full days worth of food to each household served, and by offering nutritious pre-prepared meals.

Member Duties : Through their work at OCS, the Food Justice Summer Associate will help low- and no-income community members have better access to ample fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables. You will work side by side with our Lead Gardener in The People’s Garden during the busy months helping to maintain a large, high-efficiency, organic garden. The People’s Garden is a community garden for everyone, where clients and community members can harvest fresh produce and be empowered to grow their own food. Produce not harvested by the community goes directly into our food pantry that serves all Lorain County. You will also assist in OCS’s partnerships with area farmers, harvesting produce that would otherwise rot in the fields. You will serve as an OCS and Gardening ambassador, welcoming people to visit the garden, sharing knowledge and resources, and assisting with OCS’s mobile pantries.
