CityWide Community Development VISTA 2021

CityWide has been engaged in southwest and northwest Dayton neighborhoods for years, in partnership with major stakeholders and residents. For the last two years, a VISTA has been engaged on a project supporting asset-building and food access work in these neighborhoods, helping to build capacity in communities to manage sustainable initiatives. Some of this work is concluding as we reach the end of Year 2; a few aspects of the work will be continued as part of this new project, due to work delays caused by COVID. The VISTA member would increase healthy food access by building capacity for existing programs that either are still working toward becoming self-sufficient or have become dormant and need support restarting. The VISTA will continue a partnership with a solar garden that, because of COVID impacts, still needs support recruiting new volunteers and developing a long-term plan for sale/distribution of produce grown. They will also help to support re-engaging with dormant community gardens by building a volunteer base, identifying needed resources, and working to create a plan for sustainable operation. Increasing the capacity of both programs will ensure that residents have easy access to multiple different types of affordable and healthy food options. Furthermore, the VISTA member will work to expand financial literacy and related services to two groups of residents: public housing residents and residents in Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) housing and may be eligible for homeownership in the future. The VISTA member will continue the work of a current VISTA project supporting public housing residents: because of COVID impacts, the current VISTA had to pivot focus to building capacity for more immediate supports, like rental assistance, than the longer-term interventions. With LIHTC residents, they will begin data collection and identify partners who can provide financial literacy and planning resources with a goal of eventual home ownership.
