Arts Education and Capacity Building at NHCC

The National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) in Albuquerque, NM, is dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and advancement of Hispanic culture, arts, and humanities. NHCC presents a variety of programs each year including concerts, exhibits, art making and writing workshops, school performances, and much more. VISTAs will support education projects in our community via two approaches. One is to create an online resource of our performing arts, visual arts, and history and literary arts education curriculum, to make it more accessible to educators. VISTAs will create, test and digitize new NHCC curriculum and then promote this new resource to local schools, ensuring it meets their needs. This effort is in response to a need to improve public education outcomes in New Mexico. In a 2017 Albuquerque Public Schools survey 94% of educators felt arts education greatly impacted child development, including in improving their students’ achievement, motivation and self-esteem, and although 92% said they were interested in arts education professional development, less than 25% had access to it. In the second approach, VISTAs will develop capacity building program for visual artists the NHCC works with. Although New Mexico has a high percentage of professional artists in relation to total employment in the country, artists who live in Albuquerque only earn about 58% of the national average. The University of New Mexico Bureau of Economic Research proposed several specific efforts to improve this, including providing support to artists related to developing business plans, fundraising, accounting consulting, and marketing. VISTAs will design and initiate specific capacity building workshops for artists.

Member Duties : Duties will vary for each VISTA based on their specific role in the project. VISTAs focused on creating and digitizing educational content will gather, review, test, and modify new curriculum to ensure it meets classroom standards, research existing online resources, digitize curriculum, conduct outreach to Title I schools, coordinate roll-out of the online resource, and design surveys to ensure it is a useful resource for local educators. The VISTAs that support the capacity building portion of the project will research best practices, funding sources, and coordinate workshop sessions which will involve identifying dates and times, session topics, presenters, as well as tracking registration and attendance. They will also design and analyze surveys of the artist population to determine their needs and to later determine the result of the capacity building. VISTAs will work closely with each other as well as NHCC staff to implement and market their work.
