Appalachia Health Corps

Appalachia HealthCorps is working in South Eastern Ohio and West Virginia to increase the use of peers in the health workforce. Most of our work revolves around recovery from addiction. Our members help individuals in early recovery connect to jobs, reunite with their families, connect to needed community services, and to maintain their sobriety. Most of our members can point at someone who was key to their own recovery and they want to be that person for others. Our programs have saved many lives that would have been lost to addiction without AmeriCorps PRS support. The Washington County Commission is using Community Health improvement Associates to manage this AmeriCorps program which will give us enough “boots on the ground” to widely replicate these peer models.

Member Duties : Peers are remarkably successful at helping patients improve health. In this project, you will support community members struggling to control their chronic conditions. We will train you in Chronic Pain Management, Motivational Interviewing and other evidence-based programs. We will help you get certified as a Peer Support Specialist (WV), a Peer Recovery Supporter (OH), and/or a Community Health Worker. You will increase access to care for the patients you serve and provide one-on-one health education services. AmeriCorps members do not provide health services related to prohibited items or activities, including abortion referrals or services, as will be outlined in detail during orientation. We have seen health miracles happen with this type of care. We are looking for AmeriCorps members in Wood, Hardy, Pleasants, Ritchie, Calhoun, Wirt, Jackson, and Roane Counties in WV and Washington, Meigs, Gallia, Vinton and Jackson Counties in OH. Join us and become one of our miracle workers!
