Volunteer Iowa: Disaster Volunteer Coordinator VISTA

RSVP is a dynamic national service program administered by the Corporation for National & Community Service. Central Iowa RSVP offers adult volunteers ages 55+ quality opportunities to share their skills, interests, and life experiences in response to a wide variety of community needs. Serving Story, Marshall, Hamilton and Webster counties, RSVP's mission is to enhance the lives of adults age 55 and older by connection them with rewarding volunteer experiences that meet community needs. Central Iowa RSVP also manages a Volunteer Management for Disaster/Emergency program. RSVP engages pre-trained RSVP volunteers in a variety of disaster response efforts and has 14 years of experience in disaster preparation and response. On July 23, 2018, the City of Marshalltown formally requested the assistance of RSVP in managing the mobilization of volunteers responding in the wake of an EF-3 tornado hitting a significant portion of the residential, industrial and downtown areas of the city. This project will provide an opportunity for AmeriCorps VISTA members to work alongside RSVP staff, RSVP volunteers and other community partners to engage volunteers in meeting the needs of families devastated by this disaster. The VISTA members will serve as a part of Volunteer Iowa's Rural Development and Opioid AmeriCorps VISTA project. Volunteer Iowa is a state agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. VISTA members with our program have the benefit of a statewide support network of staff, Commissioners, National Service Programs, fellow AmeriCorps members and a VISTA Leader. Members receive ongoing training, support, networking and professional development opportunities.

Member Duties : VISTA members will: Assess the current state of the Volunteer Reception Center's efforts in coordinating potential volunteer groups and projects and create or revise policies, procedures and documents to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of the volunteer recruitment and matching process. Lead coordination efforts with volunteer groups prior to, during and after their group deployment to ensure proper communication, documentation and support. Partner with the Long Term Recovery's Volunteer Management Committee and other relevant entities to develop and coordinate lodging and meal opportunities along with other support ideas identified by the committee for volunteers. Coordinate with Long Term Recovery Construction Manager to develop processes related to volunteers for housing/rebuild projects and lead volunteer groups during their deployment.
