M:STL- GGO Grants & Development VISTA

The Gateway to the Great Outdoors program was developed to allow underserved and impoverished students across the US equitable access to a comprehensive environmental education. The mission of GGO is to empower underserved youth to enhance their scientific literacy of their local natural environment through classroom and field-based environmental education and leadership development activities. This program allows students to experience the natural wonders of the outdoors, while also providing them with strong mentorship and academic support. While other EE programs focus solely on mentorship, augmented curricula or outdoor adventure, GGO is unique in that it integrates the strength of all three: (1) weekly STEM-based classroom enrichment related to the environment, (2) monthly outdoor activities that support classroom learning, and (3) year-round mentoring by local university students and community members.

Member Duties : The Grants and Development Manager VISTA member will build the capacity of Gateway to the Great Outdoors (GGO) by: (1) redeveloping GGO’s grant database to be more user friendly, (2) discover and apply for applicable grants, and (3) develop and implement a plan to establish a diverse revenue stream and develop a donor database. As a result of the VISTA member’s service, GGO will continue to expand its educational initiatives in underserved schools, thus helping to further GGO’s mission of alleviating educational inequality and environmental injustice that contributes to the cycle of poverty.
