Lift Up AmeriCorps Tutoring Program
 
 
 
LIFT UP AmeriCorps program members will serve as tutors for reading and/or math for Pre-K-12th grade students in 9 Carroll County schools and for 6th-8th grade in Smyth County schools. As an AmeriCorps tutor you will be responsible for gaining an understanding of the Virginia Standards of Learning objectives and teaching strategies to help students acquire the skills needed to succeed in reading and in math. You will be assigned specific students to tutor by the supervisor or instructional coaches at the service site (the school). • As a half-time AmeriCorps member you will provide at least 24 to 28 hours of Direct Service each week at your assigned service site. This is equivalent to a 4 day week. • Site supervisors and instructional coaches who are trained in best practices in reading and/or math will supervise the members. Members should refrain from adjusting the daily schedule unless an emergency should arise. • Time served is to be entered into the Virginia OnCorps computer system on a DAILY basis with a description of services entered into OnCorps. • Some form of AmeriCorps gear MUST be worn daily and during service projects. • A lunch break of 15 to 30 minutes must be taken if on service site at least 5 hours per day. • A member may complete up to 180 hours of TRAINING during the service year. • As part of your duties as a tutor, you are required to gather data at the beginning, mid-year, and at the end of the school year using the correct forms that will be given to you by the director. • Participation is required in community service projects. Each member is responsible for recruiting at least 15 first time community volunteers. • Email needs to be checked at least once daily.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps member will be responsible for providing tutoring to students one-on-one or in small groups, modeling appropriate behavior at all times, and following all rules and regulations in the AmeriCorps member agreement. Members will preserve confidentiality regarding students and the placement site, and participate in AmeriCorps Service Day community projects. The member will also recruit volunteers to assist in the AmeriCorps episodic community service projects.
