VYT- Howard Center Project Hire
PROGRAM: The VT Youth Tomorrow AmeriCorps VISTA Program supports initiatives helping low-income youth & families develop job skills & academic proficiency, build connection to their community, access health & mental health care, find housing, become food secure, and connect with essential services needed to transcend poverty, avoid unhealthy behaviors, reverse the impacts of COVID-19, and ultimately thrive. Website: SITE: Howard Center serves the most vulnerable, and we work to improve the well-being of children, adults, families, and communities. We provide supports and services to address mental health, substance use, and developmental needs. We support 16,000 annually in their path toward independence, health and wellness, and self-sufficiency through education, training, and support. Among our services are therapeutic schools, residential programs for people with mental illness and developmental disabilities, outpatient counseling, medication assisted recovery, crisis services, and a range of related programs. The VISTA builds the capacity of Project Hire, a program that helps individuals with developmental disabilities find meaningful careers. The VISTA supports poverty-alleviation programs in career planning, resume writing, job search including database development and input, wellness in relation to employment, skill building and related employment activities. The VISTA effects change by helping individuals who face unique challenges in finding employment and expanding their independence. The VISTA helps to break down stigma by supporting the integration of individuals with disabilities into the workforce. COVID-19 led to Project Hire supporting more individuals displaced from jobs and who couldn’t actively seek jobs due to being high risk. Services were initially provided remotely and have now been moving to in-person. The VISTA tracks and shares data trends related to job availability which supports job seekers.
