Stewards VISTA: Friends of KAG - Volunteer & Engagement

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is national park site featuring historic ponds filled with lotus, water lilies and wild habitat, offering a unique respite in our capital city. Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens (FOKAG) is dedicated to ensuring the Gardens are well-maintained, well-enjoyed, and welcoming for neighbors and visitors. We do this by connecting people to the Gardens through stewardship, public engagement, and educational programs in cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS). The neighborhoods surrounding the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens have been systemically harmed and overlooked for decades, leaving residents with few avenues for economic, professional, or personal mobility. Neighbors however have long desired for the Gardens to play a larger role in improving their quality of life. FOKAG and NPS have initiated some critical volunteer and educational programming for the Gardens’ neighbors in recent years. Volunteers have put on waders and cleaned and planted lily and lotus ponds; rebuilt pond dikes and planted banks with native plants; removed thousands of bags of invasive plants and trash; repaired trails and roads; and maintained the park’s garden beds – all while having a good time. We have made some significant inroads and now, together with you, as a Stewards VISTAs, we seek a re-envisioned Gardens where neighbors view the park as part of their community, and are compelled to care for and advocate on its behalf. The Gardens, like all national parks, suffers from a maintenance back-log and requires additional help from volunteers, as well as financial investment to public access and infrastructure. We need you to help strengthen and support the Gardens and surrounding communities by creating rich partnerships that bring volunteer services and resources to the park. This position is ideal for self-starters and fast learners who well in a team environment and on their own.
