Alaska Primary Care Association Youth Engagement
 
 
 
The Alaska Primary Care Association (APCA) is a private, 501(c)(3) membership organization of Alaska’s “safety-net” primary care providers. The APCA’s mission is “helping to create healthy communities by supporting vibrant and effective community health centers” in Alaska. Our membership includes federally-designated §330 Community Health Centers (CHCs) that serve all Alaskans, and focus particularly on providing primary care services to those who are underinsured, uninsured, and live in medically underserved areas APCA’s South Central Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is committed to addressing the health workforce needs of rural and underserved communities in the South Central and Gulf Coast region of our state. This position will help work with youth on their own wellness, help them consider the wellness of their peers, and learn about careers that promote wellness for all. The member will be an important member of a professional team of health education professionals and have the opportunity to learn how to develop curriculum, teach health/wellness promotion, develop professional networks and serve Alaskan youth. Activities include: -Deliver substance use disorder curriculum to underserved youth in Anchorage -Research and identify substance use disorder (SUD) and wellness related curriculum to be integrated into the AHEC offerings -Teach health education related courses under the supervision of a Health Education Coordinator, manage social media and assist with computer/technology logistics -Assist with logistics of delivering a year-long club and short-term camps for youth with a focus on underserved youth BENEFITS: Monthly stipend ($1,650 ), health benefits, child care assistance, and Education Award ($6,345)

Member Duties : The member’s service year will focus on developing a year-long in-person Wellness Club/HOSA Club that will meet in person. The club will serve English Language Learners and individuals from immigrant/refugee families. This is a new effort and will require planning, recruitment, partnership outreach, and developing activities. The Americorps member will also assist in leading both in-person and virtual Behavioral Health Career camps for APCA/SC AHEC. This portion of the position will involve shadowing Health Education Coordinators as they plan and execute camps throughout the year. The Americorps position help teach parts of the curriculum, lead ice breakers, and model wellness for youth.
