BCRC’s mission is to support resilient communities, and promote economic prosperity and high quality of life by providing comprehensive planning and economic development assistance to the seventeen towns it serves. BCRC provides towns with expertise and planning in the fields of energy, the environment, transportation, emergency management, solid waste, and community and economic development. BCRC’s main economic development programs include workforce retention and development, expansion of rural broadband, housing, recreation and culture, vibrant downtowns, and small business/entrepreneur assistance. Staff also work closely with Bennington College and other community organizations on food system and food security programs. All of these programs and services work collectively to promote sustainable rural development and alleviate rural poverty in Southwestern Vermont.

Member Duties : The VISTA will serve residents of Bennington County who are economically disadvantaged by assisting the Southern Vermont Communications Union District in its efforts to expand broadband in the county, helping local businesses access support services and pandemic recovery resources, assisting with workforce attraction and retention programs, and contributing to ongoing collaborative partnerships that will enhance socioeconomic inclusiveness in the region. Additionally, the VISTA will collaborate with Bennington College and other community partners on local food security initiatives. Finally, the VISTA will form partnerships, and develop resources and programs focused on promoting diversity, equity, and anti-racism in Southern Vermont. All of these efforts will help break the cycle of poverty by providing access to basic needs and economic opportunities, and fostering diverse and welcoming communities.
