Literacy AmeriCorps Palm Beach County
Literacy AmeriCorps is a project of the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County. Our joint mission is to achieve literacy in our large and highly diverse community. In Palm Beach County, more than 22% of the adult population functions at the lowest level of literacy and lacks the basic skills needed for today's world. Almost 40% of children entering fourth grade are unable to read at grade level. Illiteracy cuts through all social, racial and cultural barriers. It is often passed along through generations creating a cycle which can include not only illiteracy, but also poverty, unemployment, substance abuse, crime and low self-esteem. Many of these adults and children who cannot read or write well desperately want to learn. Literacy AmeriCorps members address this need by providing tutoring, mentoring and related literacy services at sites located throughout Palm Beach County. These sites include community based schools, after school programs, adult education and family literacy programs and community agencies. Members come from all over the USA to serve in sunny Palm Beach County. Members typically live with other members in apartments. The AmeriCorps Program will introduce all AmeriCorps members to each other and provide apartment recommendations. Ultimately, the member is responsible for securing their own living situation.
