Urban Strategies, Inc. - Career Connects (LitMN)
Urban Strategies, Inc. (USI) is a national nonprofit with 40+ years experience in strategic planning, capacity building, neighborhood transformation, and designing and implementing human capital building and community development strategies. Our mission is to ensure that “All Families will be Stable and Thriving.” We place families at the center of our decision-making and honor the resiliency and self-determination of individuals who have suffered trauma and harm, while recognizing and addressing the legacy of systemic racism and cultural oppression that have been barriers to success. 95% of current program participants live in the Heritage Park Apartments complex. 70% of residents in Heritage Park Apartments live at or below the poverty line. 45% identify as either Black or African American, 45% identify as foreign born and the remaining 10% identify as multiracial. Once a young adult agrees to participate in Career Connects, we assess their unique needs and life goals. Participants develop a roadmap towards employment and the Literacy Leader works with employers, partners and mentors to find training and job placements for them. The Literacy Leader will track outcomes, evaluate success, create program improvement plans and identify program funding. Participant goals include high school graduation rates; earning a living wage in a career; knowledge/freedom to live a healthy life; actively contributing to their community. Career Connects creates opportunities for low income young adults of color in Heritage Park to gain new skills, build confidence, and generate wealth. 20% of households have an individual in this age group, so the economic impact this population has on the community is greater than other communities on average. *Position is part of the Literacy Leadership program of Literacy Minnesota (LitMN), which places AmeriCorps VISTA members with nonprofits, public agencies & Tribal Nations in MN & WI to build capacity to improve literacy for individuals.
