Minneapolis Promise Zone-VISTA Leader

President Obama created the Promise Zone initiative to address the challenges of deep and persistent poverty. The goal of the Minneapolis Promise Zone (MPZ) is to build capacity for the City and its partners to transform distressed communities in North Minneapolis, by increasing racial equity, access to safe, affordable housing, economic development; improving education, and community health & safety. The specific goals of the project are to 1) develop key strategies through working groups to meet initiative goals; 2) support alignment between community partners, city government and the private sector; and 3) build the capacity of the initiative to effectively deliver the services that comprise the strategic plan.

Member Duties : • Conduct weekly one-on-ones with VISTAs and work as liaison with the Promise Zone Manager to identify issues and supports for VISTAs. •Coordinate logistics for public events e.g. Open Streets Minneapolis, Community Connections Conference, Northside Home Fair etc. •Identify community events and meetings, and facilitate VISTA attendance so that they can understand community issues and connect with community members. •Identify professional development opportunities for VISTAs to attend with partners and City departments. •Encourage internal discussion around racial equity by arranging viewings of racial equity oriented documentaries and/or movies, and utilizing the Office of Racial equity to facilitate conversations.
