Community Food Initiatives Food Access Summer VISTA

Community Food Initiatives (CFI) has served Appalachian Ohio for 30 years with a mission to foster communities where everyone has equal access to healthy, local food. CFI’s vision is a resilient region in which everyone in our community has access to an equitable, inclusive, and thriving local food system. The CFI Local Food Access Summer Associate will increase the capacity of low-income residents in and around Athens County, Ohio to access fresh food and to grow their own foods. They will also contribute to long term growth in the local economy by supporting local farmers and food producers and will strengthen the community through deepening partnerships with organizations and individuals throughout the local food system. The Local Food Access Summer Associate will collaborate with CFI staff, interns, and volunteers, working with the Donation Station and Community & School Gardens Programs to increase access to healthy, fresh food. The Donation Station program fights food insecurity while supporting the local food economy by using donated funds to purchase food from regional farmers that we then distribute to food access partners to feed hungry people in the community. CFI’s Community Garden Program empowers individuals to increase region-wide food access by supporting community members to learn how to grow their own food, as well as organizing and managing dedicated spaces for families to do so. The School Garden Program teaches students of all ages and school staff about the importance of healthy, fresh foods while building the skills of how to grow their own, empowering them to make healthy lifestyle choices beyond the classroom. These programs come together to build a stronger community where citizens are empowered to grow and cook their own healthy, whole foods.

Member Duties : Do you love being outdoors, working with people, and fresh healthy food? The CFI Local Food Access Associate will partner with community groups, gardeners, farmers, food pantries and other stakeholders to increase the amount of fresh and healthy local food provided this summer to the emergency food network in Appalachian Ohio.
