The mission of the Community Action Council of Portage County is... "To educate, empower, assist and advocate for our community members to achieve their maximum potential and self-sufficiency". In fulfilling its mission, the agency is charged with developing and operating programs and services that would positively impact the economically disadvantaged residents of Portage County. In doing so, the agency strives to develop innovative and dynamic solutions to poverty issues that reflect not only the needs of Portage County, but the needs of its most vulnerable residents. Community Action Council of Portage County operates the Summer Food Service Program and benefits exponentially from the services and skills of Summer VISTAs that are allocated to us. Summer VISTAs help us to address the poverty issue that affects children and food during the summer months. Studies have shown that children who receive adequate nutrition/meals along with educational summer programming and enrichment are more likely to perform better. We intend to improve the academic performance and overall health of the children affected by poverty while reducing the number of children who are unfed during the summer months.

Member Duties : VISTA members will assist in the planning, development and implementing of summer food services that improve access to meals provided by the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). This includes daily meal service; youth development activities that focus on fresh and healthy food, exercise and nutrition, reading and math, gardening and recreation. VISTAs take on the role of Summer Camp Counselors, who lead and actively engage in positive youth development that leads to improved behaviors, healthy habits and better academic outcomes for youth participants. Applicants should have an open mind, creative imagination and be able to participate in all youth-related activities and other SFSP-related duties.
