Opportunity Council - WDRC - Outreach VISTA YR 3

The Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center (WDRC) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization serving the people of Whatcom County, Washington since 1992. Our vision is for Whatcom County to be a community in which people deal with conflict in creative and healthy ways. Our mission is to provide and promote constructive and collaborative approaches to conflict through mediation, training, facilitation and community education. The WDRC serves thousands annually through affordable, efficient, and effective conflict prevention and intervention. By hosting an AmeriCorps VISTA, the WDRC aims to increase organizational efficiency and effectiveness in order to expand our capacity to serve low-income clients through conflict prevention and intervention services. The WDRC’s free and low-cost conflict prevention and intervention services break the cycle of poverty by enabling community members to avoid court, attorneys, and the associated fees. These services also build critical communication skills needed for clients to retain housing, employment, and relationships in the face of conflict. The Outreach VISTA’s focus will be the implementation, evaluation, refinement, and documentation of systems that have been built by VISTAs over the past two years. In doing so, the VISTA will ensure that the systems used to support the WDRC’s fundraising and outreach are efficient, effective, and transferable to staff and/or key volunteers, and therefore sustainable in the long-term.
