La Puente Community and Resource Development Associate

The mission of La Puente is to meet immediate needs and empower people to live independently with dignity. La Puente is a nonprofit organization that serves the homeless, the hungry, and people living in poverty in the San Luis Valley (SLV) of Colorado. The SLV is an expansive, rural area larger than the state of Massachusetts, consisting of six counties. It is a large, beautiful, isolated valley located in south central Colorado hours from the nearest cities. Over 20% of SLV residents live at or below the poverty line and are in need of some type of support. La Puente meets the need created by this level of poverty by providing emergency shelter, food assistance, supportive housing, self-sufficiency services, homeless prevention, community outreach services, and job readiness training for the homeless and community members in crisis. La Puente's services both restore and strengthen people's lives, so that they can live independently, with dignity, and thrive. The VISTA member with La Puente will provide indirect capacity building to these programs, in order to expand and increase La Puente's effectiveness and reach. Additionally, this position will increase La Puente's ability to provide these services to those in need; while doing so the member will gain professional development in nonprofit marketing, communications, fundraising, and community engagement. It offers a unique experience in understanding and communicating the struggles of rural poverty and engaging with creative opportunities to aid those in need. This is also an opportunity to live in an intentional community of AmeriCorps members who are also involved in serving the underprivileged in rural Colorado. The service community at La Puente brings together members of different backgrounds to create a diverse community with the similar value of service.
