VYDC-In-Sight Photography Project

PROGRAM: The fulltime & part-time members of the VT Youth Development Corps AmeriCorps State Program (VYDC) implement diverse youth initiatives, fostering positive development & building resilience to help youth avoid opioid misuse & other unhealthy behaviors, transcend the effects of COVID-19, and the gain academic, social, & job skills needed to thrive. Website: VermontYouthAmeriCorps.org SITE: In-Sight Photography Project empowers youth through photography and the visual arts to find their own creative voices and communicate their unique personal visions. We provide classes on a “pay-what-you-can-afford” basis. Our curriculum is guided by understanding and respect for individuals, communities, and cultures. In-Sight is dedicated to offering classes to all interested youth ages 11-18 regardless of their ability to pay class fees, giving youth an opportunity to participate in first-rate programming with knowledgeable and caring adult instructors. Programs are supported by teaching artists who help students learn job skills, life skills, self-expression, and self-worth through both digital and black and white film photography programs. Programs are offered 3 times a year (Fall, Spring, and Summer). We also offer workshops and events with local schools as well as In-Sight partnerships with other organizations to reach more youth who might not know about or programs or who might not be able to physically access our facility. The VYDC AmeriCorps member develops programs, increases outreach, and strengthens afterschool and out-of-school opportunities to ensure youth and their families continue to have equitable access to programming, especially as the Brattleboro community responds to the short- and long-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on youth including lack of access to afterschool programs, limited learning opportunities, increased food and housing insecurity, learning loss, and decreased social development.
