A STAR! in Western Maryland
 
 
 
A STAR! in Western Maryland is a diverse rural AmeriCorps program, which engages members in full time, part time, reduced part time and education award only direct service opportunities meeting the pressing issues identified within the four-county region. A STAR! partners with higher education institutions including;Frostburg State University, Allegany College of Maryland, Hagerstown Community College, and the Univeristy System of Maryland at Hagerstown. Additional partnerships include but are not limited to: Beginnings Pre-K, Allegany Department of Community Service, Frostburg Foundation, FSU Read to Succeed and VOICE Clearinghouse(volunteer), Department of Juvenile Services, Garrett County Health Department, GC Cooperative Extension, YMCA, Hagerstown Community College, Shepherd Springs, Discovery Station Frederick County Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club of Frederick, Frederick Community Action, Life and Discovery and GoodWill Industries. A STAR! members serve within their selected site and receive on site training and the opportunity to travel to in state trainings. Members become a part of a regional team - identifying issues and being instrumental in implementing a solution to these issues. Members develop individually as well and with the team during their year of service. Members position types and requirements vary.

Member Duties : Members serve directly with the selected service site and will provide direct service through academic enrichment, mentoring, emergency transportation and services, volunter recruitment and educational outreach. Members positions and slot types vary as do the age and educational requirements. 17 year old applicants are only accepted in residential program.
