VYT-Winooski Community Services Department

PROGRAM: The VT Youth Tomorrow AmeriCorps VISTA Program supports initiatives helping low-income youth & families develop job skills & academic proficiency, build connection to their community, access health & mental health care, find housing, become food secure, & connect with essential services needed to transcend poverty, avoid unhealthy behaviors, reverse the impacts of COVID-19, & ultimately thrive. Website: www.vermontyouthamericorps.org SITE: The Winooski Community Services Department fosters relationships across generations & cultures by providing safe, healthy environments & opportunities for residents to connect and engage. We promote lifelong wellness & offer high-quality, affordable programs & events that respond to community needs. We manage the O’Brien Community Center, Library, Senior Center, Community Gardens, & many youth programs (free tutoring & enriching afterschool & summer childcare). The challenges of generational poverty & English language proficiency facing many of our families make the need for accessible, low-cost, high-quality programming compelling. Volunteer support is vital to the ongoing success of our programs. It’s an important way to build resident engagement in & ownership of the programs, which is key to sustainability & success. The VISTA’s role in volunteer management allows us to build a pool of competent, trained volunteers to support our work now & into the future. As a designated Refugee Resettlement community, Winooski is home to a diverse population (31 languages spoken in schools, & 38% of students considered English Language Learner.). Many families depend on City programs & services to help them connect to the community, rise up out of poverty, and for New Americans, acculturate & settle into a new community. COVID-19: Less affordable childcare & mental wellbeing; more food & income insecurity. VISTA: builds programs (volunteers, recruits teens, & seeks funding). Location: Winooski, VT.
