Join the team at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Outreach Center and help improve the quality of life for children, youth and families in Spokane through an array of culturally responsive educational and social services within the framework of Dr. King’s vision of equal respect, treatment and accessibility for all people. This VISTA position will build on the first year of this project by expanding the focus on kindergarten readiness program support to building capacity to help increase the academic support for children participating in out-of-school time programs. This VISTA position presents a great opportunity for someone who is interested in education to gain experience in working with local schools, parents and community. This is an exciting time for this organization who has just launched a capital campaign and will be starting construction on a new center this year. The VISTA will be instrumental in helping to write grants and support the fundraising aspects of this capital campaign as well as developing a plan to continue out- of school programming during the construction of the new building. To achieve their mission, the Center: o Provides a free, state-funded Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP), a preschool programs for eligible families o Fosters strong families through innovative parenting education programs by providing on-site and in-home visitation o Provides affordable, high-quality after school and summer learning programs for children and teenagers o Promotes youth development through job training skills and teen leadership programs o Supports community involvement by providing corporate and individual volunteer opportunities o Promotes diversity by ensuring programs and services are culturally responsive o Promotes the values of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by building a culturally diverse community with services and programs free of discrimination and accessible to all

Member Duties : Increase access to quality education, tools and resources for parents, family members, neighbors and other adults who care for children preparing for kindergarten; Improve the relationship and data sharing between child care centers and the schools; Develop a sustainable tutoring program to meet the needs of the participants at the MLK Center; Evaluate after-school programs and develop systems to adapt and implement quality improvement systems to advance child and youth development; Research and identify grants to support capital building campaign; assist organization in transition programs to temporary space while a new facility is built.
