Literacy Mid-South Summer Associate

Literacy Mid-South (LMS) convenes a network of out-of-school time (OST) providers aligned toward improving third grade literacy rates in the greater Memphis area. LMS provides a variety of supports to these OST-provider partners including books, scripted lesson plans, training, and other resources that enable them to provide high quality literacy interventions to elementary students. One of those LMS-provided resources is personnel support through AmeriCorps. During the summer, the LMS OST Network is aligned toward mitigating summer learning loss with a focus on students at most risk. LMS AmeriCorps Summer Associates are recruited to bring their skills to match the needs of over a dozen OST partners that range from national organizations to small, local churches. Summer Associates have provided direct instruction to students, provided data management support, helped to build new interventions, assembled and distributed tens of thousands of literacy resources, and more. Since 2016, Summer Associates have found new ways to help the OST-providers that make up the LMS OST Network work toward the goal of mitigating summer learning loss for thousands of students across our metropolitan area. In 2022, LMS partner organizations face unprecedented challenges responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and the learning loss that has occurred as a result. Students, partners, and AmeriCorps members have proven resilient. As in 2020 & 2021, Literacy Mid-South Summer Associates will remain flexible in the support offered—responding to partner and community needs and amplifying LMS’s focus on social-emotional learning techniques and data-driven continuous quality improvement.

Member Duties : SAs are recruited to bring their skills to match the needs of over a dozen OST-provider partners that range from national organizations to small, local churches. Based on skill and interest, SAs can be a part of a number of different teams focused on: building literacy resources, distributing literacy resources, working directly with elementary students (virtually or in-person), supporting LMS OST-provider partners or LMS as a intermediary organization (nonprofit management), creating or improving literacy interventions, communicating directly with families/communities, collecting or managing data, performing literacy intervention observation, and more. While there are prescribed tasks for SAs to complete, each summer SAs find new ways to support the work being done across the LMS OST Network. LMS encourages this creativity and flexibility.
