Science Museum of MN Alumni Engagement Member(CSP)

The College and Career Access VISTA member’s effort will increase the capacity of the Science Museum of Minnesota’s Kitty Andersen Youth Science Center (KAYSC) program to support the college and career aspirations of participating youth. If you are a creative problem solver with a passion for social justice and education, this is the position for you. The Kitty Andersen Youth Science Center (KAYSC) is a youth development and youth employment program that engages approximately 350 middle and high school students and recent graduates from communities underrepresented in STEM fields (60% girls, 85% students of color, 80% low-income students) as direct participants each year. Since 1996, the KAYSC has engaged young people in STEM learning and work experiences that empower them to pursue their potential, contribute to their communities, and recognize their ability to impact institutions and communities. In the KAYSC, high school youth apply culturally rich STEM content to work toward social justice in a STEM Justice model based on learning STEM content, youth participatory action research, and best practices in youth development. As they work within this STEM Justice model to address critical community issues/needs, youth build confidence and workforce skills tied to STEM. Through large group workshops, small group field trips and one-on-one mentoring young people receive support to create pathways of success into college and careers. This approach provides space for all youth, regardless of their prior success in STEM, to see themselves as capable STEM practitioners with the skills to apply STEM knowledge and practices to make a positive impact in their communities. ** This position is part of the City of St. Paul VISTA Cohort. This cohort provides a learning community of 20 fellow VISTA members all serving within Saint Paul. We provide bi-weekly professional development training and additional support throughout the year.
