Springfield Promise Neighborhood: Resource Development

Springfield Promise Neighborhood (SPN or Promise) works with residents in a 110-block area in Springfield, Ohio. This is the attendance zone of Lincoln Elementary School, and the home to over 4500 neighbors and all of the ~430 students who attend the school. Our purpose broadly is poverty alleviation, but the real on the ground purpose is to provide the context in which youth can thrive. Lincoln serves the most economically, academically, and socially challenged student populations in the Springfield City School District. 100% of the students meet federal poverty guidelines for free and reduced lunch. The students reside in a highly mobile and under-resourced community. Our job is to help the amazing teachers at the school with their academic mission by providing the infrastructure for extended day and year opportunities. Very specifically we want to help the children to read and love learning. Our job in the neighborhood is to work with the residents to revitalize a neighborhood lacking playgrounds, day care facilities, and places of beauty and safety. Very specifically we work with residents to help turn vacant lots into playgrounds, abandoned and poisoned ground into gardens, and conditions of threat into the connections that allow residents to move freely with assurance and safety. The premise of Springfield Promise Neighborhood’s operates from the conviction that sustained change relies on caring for a certain place fueled by the assets of those who work and live there. At the center of change are the children. We work on their behalf with the thought that their academic and social growth requires a good and supportive school and a good and supportive community. What emerges within the elastic bounds of this mission and with the help of over 60 community partners are new athletic, art, and civic opportunities, peace walks, youth summits and safety collaboratives, and a network of gardens producing 1000 of pounds of local, nutrient rich foods.
