Mayor Peduto's Office, Community Health Engagement Associate

Healthy Together aims to provide 100% health care coverage for youth living in the City of Pittsburgh. Over the last two decades, Pennsylvania made significant progress expanding access to affordable health insurance for children and families. Pennsylvania's Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) was the first of its kind nationally and today covers nearly 190,000 children across Pennsylvania. Medicaid covers over 1 million children across the Commonwealth and over 90,000 children in Allegheny County alone. But, there are those who are left behind and we estimate that there are at least 2,000 children in the City of Pittsburgh who do not have health insurance yet qualify for Medicaid or CHIP. In addition, between 2011 and 2013, the number of children enrolled in Medicaid dropped significantly. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, statewide Medicaid enrollment for children declined by over 90,000 and by more than 10,000 in Allegheny County. Moreover, the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured, affirms Medicaid enrollment of families, children, and pregnant women declined more in Pennsylvania than in any other state during the period of June 2011 to June 2012. Between August 2011 and April 2014, the number of Pennsylvania's children enrolled in Medicaid was still down by nearly 60,000. Furthermore, there are still parents who simply do not know what health insurance options are available for their children or themselves. In all cases, parents would benefit from having qualified personnel to assist in navigating the system of bureaucracy. Outreach in the community combined with systematic change will not only help Pittsburgh achieve 100% coverage now, but will also ensure sustainability well into the future.
