CCNYPA Gettysburg College VISTA

Over the years, the partnerships in Adams County, including not only between Casa de la Cultura and the Center for Public Service, but also with Healthy Adams County, the Adams County Farmers Market, and Wellspan, have proven effective at addressing these barriers. For example, intentional efforts to overcome language barriers with the promotion of the Healthy Options food voucher program has resulted in more Latinx families utilizing the program, and therefore a greater presence of Latinx families at the Farmers Market buying healthy, fresh, local vegetables. This is evidence that our community’s commitment to coming together (primarily through the Adams County Food Policy Council) to address the barriers lead to better health measures, such as the number of vegetables consumed per week. In addition, within the past four months, two members of the Latinx community in Gettysburg have moved from no or seasonal employment to secure work at Gettysburg College. While not a direct goal of the program, it is an effect of members of the Latinx community feeling less isolated and more welcomed at the college (as a result of programs hosted by Casa de la Cultura on campus). The AmeriCorps VISTA member will continue to address the barriers mentioned above. New bilingual resources will be developed to provide the local Latinx community with greater and more manageable access to the skills and tools needed to foster a healthy and safe environment and encourage members to become more physically active.
