Prince George’s County Virtual Resource Center

The goal of the Prince George’s County Virtual Resource Center Project is to provide a one-stop center that consists of human services non-profit organizations in the county. With this virtual resource center in place, people in need will be able to find and access resources such as local food banks, domestic violence shelters, and tutoring and college prep programs. In addition, it will help local service providers assist their clients in finding such services. In creating a virtual resource center we will; 1. Create a database of all active human service focused non-profits in Prince George’s County, 2. Create a web-based tool so that community members can find, or help others find, the services they require, and 3. Lead a mass marketing campaign to raise awareness about this resource. The Human Services Coalition did a preliminary scan of the human services non-profits that have been identified by the IRS as 501(c)3 organizations. This year’s MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer has made continued attempts to contact the remaining non-profits that were identified as having a human service focus. Those non-profits that have been found active have been put into an online database. In the upcoming year the MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA will modify the tools created in year 1 to make this website more user-friendly and self-sustaining and lead a publicity effort to raise awareness about this tool to local community members, public servants, and other non-profits in the area. It is only through connecting people in need with the services they require that poverty will be eradicated. The completion of this project through the MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA program will put the virtual resource center on the express path to being a fully functioning community asset ready to be used by community members throughout the county. This position is hosted through the Maryland-DC Campus Compact (MDCCC) which is a non-profit membership association of colleges and universities.

Member Duties : This year the primary job of the MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA member will be to finalize and implement an outreach plan and materials, reaching out to those who work and live in Prince George’s County so that individuals, family members, and community members can help those living in need within the County. They will also host trainings for community partners on how to use the database and assess how it is working to help meet their needs. Finally, they will create and implement an assessment of the virtual resource center itself so that changes can continue to be made so that it is more user friendly for people in need, service providers, and volunteers.
