SERVE Philly - Food Policy Advisory Council Coordinator
 
 
 
Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter’s Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Service is accepting applications for one full-time SERVE Philadelphia AmeriCorps VISTA member to serve for a period of one year in the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability (MOS). The VISTA will work with the Food Policy Advisory Council (FPAC), which is convened by the MOS, to increase the involvement of low-income individuals in the FPAC. The FPAC Outreach Coordinator will work to develop materials and strategies to recruit and involve low-income individuals in FPAC work setting the food policy agenda and ultimately improving food access in Philadelphia. This position will provide ample opportunities to work with individuals throughout City government and in the community. This position requires an interest in food access, project management, recruitment, outreach, volunteer management, and organizational development. The ideal candidate must be a team player, have an ability to work well in diverse neighborhoods, with diverse populations, high-comfort level with Microsoft Office and a strong attention to detail. While this member’s project will be housed within MOS, the VISTA will also be a member of the SERVE Philadelphia VISTA Corps – which is managed by the Mayor’s Office of Civic Engagement & Volunteer Service. The SERVEPhiladelphia VISTA corps is made up of 20+ members that contribute to projects designed to impact financial empowerment, food security, youth engagement, community revitalization, and volunteer mobilization. This corps gathers as a team twice per month and contributes to pre-established committees that create a culture of community, support, and professional development for all VISTAs. As a member of SERVE Philadelphia, the VISTA will gain access to professional development activities, a monthly transportation pass, support from a VISTA team leader, and opportunities to collaborate with other SERVE Philadelphia VISTAs serving within City government.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps VISTA working on this project will assist the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability with supporting the Philadelphia Food Policy Advisory Council (FPAC). The VISTA will work to ensure that the FPAC communicates to, engages with, and recommends policies supportive of low-income populations. Specifically, the VISTA will: (1) Increase awareness of current food access resources in Philadelphia, the work of FPAC, and opportunities for individuals to participate in the FPAC; (2) Develop training materials for policy workshops that educate residents on current local policies around food access and how to influence those policies; (3) Recruit individuals to attend policy workshops and conduct trainings; (4) Ensure training materials are accessible to diverse communities within Philadelphia; and (5) Educate Philadelphians on the importance of food waste diversion as a tool to both prevent hunger and reduce landfill waste.
