A-SPAN Vista Program - Volunteer and Outreach Specialist

A-SPAN has grown over the past five years in response to the recession and a growing need for services for people experiencing homelessness in Arlington. We provide care to chronically homeless people or people experiencing homelessness for the first time – the cause of which can be the loss of a job, the loss of a loved one, a health issue and more. Every person’s situation is unique and deeply personal. In response, A-SPAN first provides emergency needs services, such as food, clothing and shelter. People in need can access these services at our shelter or year-round drop-in center. However, if a homeless person doesn’t reach out to us, street outreach staff regularly visit woods, abandoned buildings and other areas to bring care to them. Most importantly, A-SPAN strives to help people move past homelessness through housing. Our full line of supportive services including ongoing in-house case management, free medical care, job training and placement, and mental health and substance abuse treatment help people stay in housing, get healthy, earn income and return to a more stable and self-sufficient life. As programs have expanded, so has our need for volunteer recruitment and retention, especially considering A-SPAN’s planned expansion from a five-month hypothermia shelter to a year-round shelter and Homeless Services Center. Homelessness is a community-wide challenge and one that requires an entire community to mobilize in response, from local government, businesses, faith groups, schools to the average Arlington citizen. We must increase our capacity to share client and volunteer stories, share our successes or challenges and communicate agency needs. Three areas that the VISTA program will support: development, volunteer management and outreach and communications, will help strengthen A-SPAN's ability to provide emergency services and provide housing to one of the most vulnerable populations in Arlington, the street homeless.

Member Duties : Homelessness is a community-wide challenge and one that requires an entire community to mobilize in response, from local government, businesses, faith groups, schools to the average Arlington citizen. As A-SPAN’s programs have expanded in response to the growing number and need of homeless persons, so has our need for volunteer recruitment and retention. This is especially critical as A-SPAN prepares to move from a winter shelter to a year-round shelter and Homeless Services Center. The AmeriCorps VISTA who successfully fills the Volunteer Management and Outreach Specialist at A-SPAN will build the capacity of our volunteer program by recruiting new volunteers, creating new opportunities and developing recruitment and management tools, including a recruitment and management manual and a volunteer training guide. This VISTA member will conduct community outreach through site tours and presentations at monthly point of entry events, which develop prospective donors and volunteers.
