13 HOS VISTA Jewish Coalition for Literacy- Parent/Community

The Jewish Coalition for Literacy (JCL) envisions a society where no child is limited from reaching his or her full potential by the inability to read. JCL’s mission states that we are dedicated to eliminating childhood illiteracy by mobilizing tutors, engaging parents and expanding libraries to help underserved public school children throughout the Bay Area. A shocking 75% of public school children in California are unable to read at grade level by the time they enter fourth grade. This is a critical pivot point when children shift from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” Research shows that kids who are unable to read well by the time they enter 4th grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school, which limits their options for the rest of their lives. By providing at-risk children individualized literacy support at this crucial time, JCL hopes to turn struggling readers into confident, confident readers who are on the road to academic success.
