CTCC: Connecticut College

CT Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA program was developed in 2008 to address the local needs of low-income communities and to be a mechanism for community change. Through campus based placements, our AmeriCorps VISTA members build, support, and deepen partnerships between campuses and local organizations in two areas: education and economic opportunity. These partnerships will strengthen the capacity of local organizations to alleviate poverty in low-income communities by leveraging the resources of higher education institutions. Connecticut College’s Community Learning/Service Office recruits, trains, and transports 500 students annually. The college students work in schools, hospitals, and human services. They work with community partners and contribute to increased academic levels, increased physical fitness and health and well being, increased program capacity to deliver services, and expanded research. They work in New London where 19.2% of residents and 31.9% of children are below the poverty level and a majority of children and youth do not demonstrate mastery on Connecticut State Mastery Tests. The community is ethnically diverse and has a large Spanish speaking population. This VISTA project focuses on educational partnerships with the New London Public Schools to increase academic success and on capacity building with a wide range of human service organizations and agencies.
