BUILDING TIME BANKING CAPACITY TO FIGHT POVERTY AND DISINVES

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's Sustainability and Civic Engagement Offices invite two VISTAS to join an exciting team researching alternative ways for people to meet their economic needs by setting up a time and talent bartering system. Time Banking is being used in communities around the world, and we want to explore how it would work best in the South Coast region of Massachusetts. This part of the state is a mix of small coastal towns and two of the state's largest most historic cities. Residents have widely varied career and educational backgrounds which could make Time Banking a very successful solution to restoring self sufficiency and dignity to anyone suffering unemployment or insufficient income. Work would be performed part time at the University and part time in the community hosted by two partnering community groups. Successful applicants will be learning cutting edge economic solutions for a changing world, and will be helping disadvantaged citizens find a pathway to hope for the future and improved self-esteem. Although the VISTAS will have support from University staff and graduate students, this project is also an opportunity to shine with independent research and problem solving skills. The Sustainability Office is an award-winning 'Leading by Example' establishment, and UMass Dartmouth is on the Princeton Review's list of Green Colleges. Massachusetts itself is a leader in sustainable development for a healthier future for people and the planet.

Member Duties : Vistas will spend the first part of the year researching Time Banking initiatives with a goal of understanding what has worked for other communities, and why. They will also spend time getting to know the local area through shadowing non-profit leaders and attending community meetings. They will be assisted by a team of university and community leaders in New Bedford and Fall River who will help them analyze the best Time Bank options for our area. Once a structure for the SouthCoast Time Bank has been chosen, Vistas will set up a website and other media materials. They will also develop member protocols. In the spring of 2013, Vistas will be spreading the word about the TimeBank to the local communities and encouraging individuals and organizations to join the TimeBank. VISTAS must each have a car to perform their duties. Bi-lingual applicants are preferred and a respect for varied communities is essential. Vistas must have a car.
