VYT-WCYSB Prevention Programs
The Washington County Youth Service Bureau/Boys & Girls Club has been helping low-income youth and families thrive since 1974. Today, a staff of 37 provides youth and family counseling, crisis intervention, support services, and out-of-school time programs. Our mission is to provide a wide range of innovative and effective programs that empower and enrich the lives of youth and families in Washington County, and to provide leadership and support to other youth programs throughout Vermont. Our prevention programs for low-income youth include the Basement Teen Center (Montpelier), the Northfield Teen Center (Northfield), and the Washington County Street Outreach Program. The Basement and Northfield Teen Center are open from 3-6 Monday through Thursday and from 3-10 on Fridays during the school year, and operate extended hours during the summer months. The outreach program is a team of young people who travel around Washington County speaking with youth, meeting their basic needs, and connecting them to services they could benefit from. The Teen Centers are staffed daily by at least 2 experienced, trained adult workers. Young people play an active role in creating and caring for the teen center space, setting rules, resolving conflicts, and planning and operating programs. Special events are planned monthly and include arts, music, movies, discussion groups, teen council, trips, community service, gardening, cooking, meals and snacks are available. The VISTA works with the prevention programs to enhance our ability to serve low-income youth throughout Washington County. The member responsibilities will enrich the lives of youth by recruiting mentors, improving operational systems, enhancing funding streams and working with community partners to provide opportunities for low-income youth to have their basic needs met, to feel empowered, build skills, and encourage positive development.
