Saint Paul Public Schools -- St. Paul VISTA Program

Saint Paul Public Schools is one of Minnesota's largest school districts with more than 39,000 students, speaking more than 125 languages and dialects, in 85 schools and programs. The end of the 2013-2014 school year marks the completion of the first phase of the Strong Schools, Strong Communities strategic plan for improving the education of all Saint Paul Public Schools students. This second phase will be a time to refine our focus and dig deeper to accelerate student learning through our three strategic goals of Achievement, Alignment and Sustainability. We will focus our work on providing students with a premier education and getting students ready for college and career. In Saint Paul Public Schools, we recognize that our mission depends on broad-based support – from students, families, staff, partner organizations and community members. The Office of Family Engagement & Community Partnerships (OFECP) works to build this support in the following program areas: 1)Parent Academy and Children's Learning Academy 2)Multilingual and Community Parent Advisory Councils (PACs) 3)Community Partnerships 4)Truancy Intervention Programs 5)Family Engagement, Ombudsperson, and Parent Information and Outreach Through the work of a team of three AmeriCorps VISTA members, OFECP’s Community Partnerships project will build deeper and aligned community partnerships, better support schools to meet the needs of students and families, strengthen the standing of the district in our community, and strategically position the project as a resource that builds the capacity of the community to help educate children and youth in Saint Paul. ** The SPPS VISTA positions are sponsored by the Saint Paul VISTA Program. Hosted in Mayor Chris Coleman's Office, the Saint Paul VISTA Program is comprised of a city-wide cohort of individuals -- placed at community organizations and schools -- dedicated to shaping the educational landscape for youth and families in Saint Paul. **

The team will accomplish this by: 1)Developing and implementing multiple internal and external promotional strategies to raise the profile of the project throughout Saint Paul. 2)Collaborating with schools and partners to determine school and community needs and assets, pair schools with appropriate partners, and provide support for schools in managing partnerships and volunteers from community partners. 3)Designing an evaluation plan for the Community Partnerships program to determine if intended outcomes are being met effectively and with high quality. 4)Providing training opportunities for new and existing authorized community partners that will help them better serve our students and families.
