Oromo Community of MN -- St. Paul VISTA Program

The OCM’s mission is to enhance the quality of life of the Oromo in Minnesota—the state’s second largest East African immigrant group. Key organizational goals include: expanding access to health, health education, employment counseling, youth enrichment, self-sufficiency, improving seniors’ social engagement, promoting academic excellence, and creating a vibrant and cohesive community where everyone is expected to succeed and live a healthy, engaged, and meaningful life. Through the work of an AmeriCorps VISTA member, OCM will be able to better support the academic proficiency and graduation of Oromo youth–-and the broader segment of youth that participate-–by offering quality out-of-school-time tutoring, opportunities for service, and college access programming through collaboration with fellow OCM staff. The central goal of the VISTA project is to continue the development of a homework-help and enrichment program that will ultimately grow out-of-school time academic supports for Oromo and East-African youth in the Saint Paul Promise Neighborhood. As the VISTA for the Oromo Community of Minnesota, our service member will be entering a network of support and encouragement not only from the OCM Staff but from the St. Paul VISTA Program Cohort, an element that truly sets apart this experience--from good to great! If you are looking for the opportunity of a lifetime--to make true change in the lives of youth and families--we are looking for you! **This VISTA position is sponsored by the Saint Paul VISTA Program. Hosted in Mayor Chris Coleman's Office, the Saint Paul VISTA Program is comprised of a city-wide cohort of individuals -- placed at community organizations and schools -- dedicated to shaping the educational landscape for youth and families in Saint Paul.**
